your work will sound more genuine

How can you write about anything without knowing about it? You must be able to draw from your bank of knowledge to put on paper. So if you know a bit, you’ll write a bit and then stumble. If you know enough, you’ll write enough and then stumble. If you know plenty, you’ll have plenty to talk about and you will just keep writing – feeding your characters, the scenes, the plot.
