SET YOUR CHARACTERS IN MOTION
Place the person or the noun delivering the action first, and you will have an active story.
'John delivered the parcel' is more active than 'The parcel was delivered by John'.
Similarly, 'The gesture surprised Joanna' is more active than 'Joanna was surprised by the gesture'.
Sometimes it's fine to use passive voice but this should be done sporadically.
